What is GST and why should a pet business care?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is one tax that replaced the old mix of VAT, service tax and excise. Every product you sell and every service you offer has a GST rate attached. When you buy stock - food, shampoo, collars, medicines - you pay GST to your supplier. When you sell, you collect GST from the customer.

The part most small pet businesses miss: if you're GST-registered, the GST you paid on purchases comes back to you as credit. If you're not registered, it's just a cost. That one difference changes your margins, and it's what this calculator is built to show.

Registered or not: what changes for your business

GST-registered

  • You charge GST on every sale (grooming, boarding, products)
  • You claim back the GST you paid on stock and supplies (Input Tax Credit)
  • You pay the government only the difference: GST collected minus GST paid
  • You can sell to other businesses, on marketplaces, and across states
  • You file monthly or quarterly returns

Not registered

  • You cannot charge GST on sales
  • The GST you pay on stock is a cost you absorb - no credit
  • You keep the full amount the customer pays
  • You can't sell inter-state or on most marketplaces
  • No GST returns to file

Registration is mandatory once your turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services in most states (lower in some north-eastern and hill states), or immediately if you sell inter-state or through an online marketplace. Confirm with your CA.

GST slabs in India for 2026 (in force since 22 September 2025)

The old five slabs (0, 5, 12, 18, 28%) were replaced by four. Here's where pet-industry items land:

0%

Exempt

Vet consultation by a registered vet, cattle/poultry feed

5%

Everyday

Pet shampoo, vet medicines, vaccines, pet toys, diagnostic kits

18%

Standard

Pet food, collars, leashes, bowls, crates, grooming, boarding, daycare

40%

Luxury & sin

Not applicable to typical pet businesses

Note: Pet food (HSN 2309) is taxed at 18% even though cattle and poultry feed is exempt - a common point of confusion.

Pet-industry GST rates for 2026, and what they replaced

These are the rates in force today. The previous column is the regime that ran until 21 September 2025 - four pet-industry lines came down, the rest held.

What the 2026 rates are worth to you, in rupees

Rate tables are abstract until you put an order behind them. Below is the same ₹10,000 of stock (before GST) bought under the old rate and today's rate.

ItemRate changeYou used to payYou pay nowCash saved per order
Pet shampoo & grooming products18% → 5%₹11,800₹10,500₹1,300
Veterinary medicines12% → 5%₹11,200₹10,500₹700
Pet toys12% → 5%₹11,200₹10,500₹700
Diagnostic kits12% → 5%₹11,200₹10,500₹700
One order of each, ₹10,000 apiece₹3,400

If you're registered

You were always getting that GST back as input tax credit, so the cut doesn't change your profit on a sale. What it changes is cash flow: ₹3,400 less is parked with the government waiting to be set off. Buying at 5% while selling grooming at 18% means more net GST each month, not less - the credit side just got smaller.

If you're not registered

This is a straight cost saving. You never could claim that GST back, so ₹3,400 less leaving the business is ₹3,400 more profit on the same shelf price. Put your own numbers in the calculator to see where you now land.

CGST, SGST and IGST - which one shows up on your bill?

CGST + SGST (same-state sales)

When you sell within your state, the GST splits in half: one half to the Centre, one half to the State. A ₹1,000 grooming session at 18% shows ₹90 CGST + ₹90 SGST.

IGST (inter-state sales)

When you sell to another state - say a Bengaluru store shipping to Chennai - the full rate goes as IGST. Same ₹1,000 at 18% shows ₹180 IGST.

Does it change what you pay?

No. The total is identical. It only changes how the invoice is labelled. Your billing software should handle this automatically.

The two formulas behind every GST calculation

Adding GST (you know the base price)

GST amount = Base price × Rate ÷ 100

Total = Base price + GST amount

Example

Grooming session priced at ₹1,000 base, 18% GST

GST = 1,000 × 18 ÷ 100 = ₹180

Customer pays = ₹1,180

Removing GST (you know the price the customer paid)

Base price = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate)

GST amount = Total − Base price

Example

A 3 kg bag of dog food sold at ₹1,180 (GST included), 18%

Base = 1,180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000

GST = 1,180 − 1,000 = ₹180

How to use this calculator

  1. 1

    Tell us if you're GST-registered.

This decides whether input tax credit applies.

  2. 2

Enter what you paid and what you sell for.

The purchase price is treated as the base price before GST, the way supplier invoices quote it - tick “includes GST” if your figure already has tax in it. The sale price is treated as GST-inclusive, since that's what the customer pays.

  3. 3

    Read your results.

Profit, margin, GST paid, GST collected, credit you can claim and what you owe - in one panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Registration becomes mandatory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services in most states (₹20 lakh / ₹10 lakh in some special-category states). It's mandatory from day one if you sell inter-state or through an online marketplace, regardless of turnover. Many businesses register voluntarily below the threshold to claim input tax credit and sell to other businesses.
