What pet stores
use it for

Repacked and loose food

Kibble sold by the kilo, treats split into smaller packs, bird seed by weight. Print name, price and net quantity with the barcode so it rings up in one scan.

Accessories with no barcode

Collars, leashes, toys and bowls from local suppliers often arrive unlabelled. Give each one a code so billing stops being a search through a product list.

Your own brand

Own-label treats, shampoos or grooming kits. Code 128 works in your own store; for marketplaces and retail chains, get EAN numbers from GS1 in your country.

Shelves, bins and stock counts

Label shelf edges and storage bins with a number sequence, then scan them during a stock count instead of writing things down.

Which barcode type
should you use?

For anything you label yourself, use Code 128. The others are for specific cases:

TypeWhat it holdsUse it forWorth knowing
Code 128Letters, digits, symbolsYour own SKUs, repacked items, in-store labelsOur default: the most compact, read by every scanner
EAN-1313 digitsPackaged products sold through other retailersReal numbers come from GS1; 200–299 is free for in-store use
UPC-A12 digitsRelabelling US-imported goodsReads as EAN-13 on most scanners outside the US
Code 39A–Z, 0–9, - . $ / + % spaceOlder warehouse scannersWider than Code 128 for the same code
ITF / ITF-14Even number of digitsOuter cartons and cases from suppliersPrints cleanly on rough cardboard

About EAN codes

Real EAN-13 numbers are issued by GS1 in your country and must be unique worldwide. Don't make one up. For labels used only in your own store, start EAN codes with 200–299, a range GS1 keeps free for exactly this.

Selling in India?

EAN codes starting 890 belong to companies registered with GS1 India. Pick Indian rupee in the tool and the Detailed label prints MRP “incl. of all taxes”, net quantity, dates, unit sale price and customer care, the declarations the Legal Metrology rules ask for on goods you repack. Printing: label sheets
or a thermal printer

A4 label sheets

Peel-off sticker sheets from any stationer, on the laser or inkjet printer you already have. Cheap to start, and the page prints on a half-used sheet if you tell it how many labels are gone.

  • 65 per sheet (38 × 21 mm) for small items and toys
  • 24 or 21 per sheet (64 × 34 / 38 mm) for food bags with name and price
  • Print at 100% scale with margins off

Thermal label printer

A roll printer for counter-side labelling. No ink, no sheets to line up, and one label comes out per item. Most install as a normal printer on Windows and Mac, so they print straight from this page.

  • 50 × 25 mm is the common retail size
  • 2-across 38 × 25 mm rolls are supported
  • Set the same label size in the printer's settings
